I received a copy of the book Christ Our Mediator by CJ Mahaney for the purpose of posting a review.
It's a short read, but Christ Our Mediator has profound insight and is completely convicting throughout. I found myself highlighting favorite quotes on almost every page.
The author begins by recounting his experience with the movie The Passion of the Christ, and he says, "Images... cannot adequately convey the gospel's content. The gospel message isn't visual; it's truth." He then goes on throughout the book to really paint a picture, if you will, of the true meaning of the cross.
Christ's suffering was so much more than just suffering. It is hard to really understand exactly what He went through for us (and thank God we don't ever have to understand by experience!). Reading and studying the scriptures is necessary -- of course we need to meet God in His Word -- but sometimes we may need commentary to help us really understand what God is telling us. We often receive insightful commentary at church, from our Pastor's message; sometimes we receive insight while listening to or singing along with worship music. Oftentimes too, we receive insight from books or from study guides. Christ Our Mediator is a great example of insightful commentary in reference to the true reason for Christ's death.
Jesus freely takes [the cup] Himself... so that from the cross He can look down at you and me, whisper our names, and say, "I drain this cup for you -- for you who have lived in defiance of Me, who have hated Me, who have opposed Me. I drink it all... for you."
This is what our sin makes necessary.
Mahaney asks, "do we ourselves adequately understand the deepest reasons behind the cross?" I thought I understood before! Now after having read Christ Our Mediator, my faith has grown even deeper with a clearer understanding of what Christ went through to save me.
